Makalawena Beach is on the Kona Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii and is difficult to access. You’ll either need a ‘lava crawler’ (which is local term for specialized 4X4 with tires, suspension and height designed to handle the rough terrain of the lava) or you’ll have to get in by hiking the trail down the lava rock which is about 30 minutes for an avid hiker. It is a gorgeous beach, and a very popular spot for the locals. If you decide to visit, make sure you are courteous and respect the aina (land!)
